The "Toastrack" vintage bus: a century of engineering!
Come and see a 1928 vintage Dennis charabanc bus and experience engineering from a century ago!
Join us on Highfield Campus, where you'll be able to get on the University's own 95-year-old bus, and hear the sounds of its newly-rebuilt engine! Sit back, relax, and enjoy a first-hand experience of being on a bus that's literally as old as sliced bread, lovingly nicknamed "Toastrack".
The bus, a Dennis G-class, is one of only four that were ever built, and the only one in the world that's currently running! Toastrack measures 20 ft. by 8 ft., can seat 16 people, and is convertible, so you'll be able to join us come sunshine or rain.
Toastrack has been driven and maintained by students and staff at the University of Southampton ever since its purchase in 1958. You'll be able to see the history of the bus as well as all the exciting places it has travelled to since - including as far as Venice! Today, Toastrack forms part of a student-run society, with members across multiple disciplines working on the bus during their free time, all towards one goal: keeping the bus on the road and safe for future generations to enjoy.
